RIDE OF LOVE - May 18, 2013

The Ride of Love will kick off the first camp session of the summer. The scenic route winds through the beautiful countryside of Alabama and finishes at the campsite. Upon finishing, participating cyclists are able to meet the children and families for whom they are riding and raising money.

Come to IHOP to see the riders off if you're not participating…and bring your checkbook to support the kids and their families in attending this summer's camp. Cyclists depart at 6 a.m.

TOUR DE CURE – THIS SATURDAY

Tour de Cure is May 18 starting at St Vincent's 119 in Birmingham. There are 20, 37, 64 and 105 mile routes. Register at tour.diabetes.org - look up Alabama to find the page. You can join Team Red, join as an individual or form a team. The minimum fundraising level is $150. Diabetes affects 26 million people in the U.S. and Alabama has the highest rate of diabetes (we trade off with Mississippi for first or second). Diabetes complicates life in many ways because it usually is not the only illness someone is dealing with. Stroke, heart disease, problems with vision and with feet are all related. If you are not riding in the Ride of Love, please come join us in Birmingham on May 18.

FOREVER WILD PHOTO CONTEST

Alabama Forever Wild is sponsoring a Photography Contest for roadies and mountain bikers riding on Alabama roads and land. This contest is to promote cycling as an important part of attracting tourism to Alabama and promoting the great trails and road riding we have in our state. We’ve always known Alabama is the best kept secret in road and mountain biking. Let’s change that now! We know cyclists are a bit narcissistic, so there’s no shortage of good biker shots and selfies out there. If you have some good shots made in Alabama, here’s how to send them in to the contest. This is a social media contest, so there are many paths to glory.

John Newsome broke his record of 5:02 with a 5:00 flat. The gap between 2nd and 4^th was only 6 seconds. I didn’t look at the times from last year but I think Aileen has done it again and put in another pr.
