Tuscaloosa Police Department Bicycle Safety Information and Helmet-Handout

by Pixie on August 9, 2011

The purpose of this effort is to assist bicyclists who may not be aware of the dangers of riding against traffic, riding on the sidewalk, and riding without a helmet.

Helmets may be offered to any adult cyclists (18 and over) who will agree to wear them.  91% of bicyclists killed in 2008 were not wearing a helmet.  The most serious injuries among a majority of those killed were to the head.  The helmets are donated by VeloCity Pro Cycle of Tuscaloosa.

Printed material provides information for both cyclists and motorists on how to share the road in a patient and considerate way:

*Tuscaloosa Area Bicycling is a brochure designed by Boost which offers tips to bicyclists on safe ways to ride in traffic.  The brochure is printed courtesy of the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

*The Tuscaloosa Bike Map is the result of a group called I bike tuscaloosa,   University students who saw the need for helping Tuscaloosa cyclists find safe routes to school and work.

*Bicycle Safety is provided by Farmers Insurance Group and offers safety tips such as riding on wet pavement, preventing bicycle theft, caring for your bike, and a bike maintenance checklist.
